The Step-by-Step Guide to Buying Your Garage Door

Looking for a new garage door? It pays to do your homework

Buying a garage door is not a decision to be taken lightly. As probably the largest moving part in your house, it’s important to choose the right garage door in line with your household’s requirements. If you’re looking at replacing an old door or adding the finishing touches to your new build, here’s our guide to making sure you get the garage door you need.

Through innovation, technology and design, garage doors have changed over the last decade. Where once your choice was limited to a tilt door, there are now a variety of garage door options to choose from, including rolling doors and steel sectional doors. There are also numerous colours, finishes, styles and optional extras that you can specify.

When selecting your garage door you should consider your immediate needs. For example, you may have children or pets, so safety should be front of mind. Automated doors these days have photoelectric safety devices that will stop the closing door and reverse it to the open position if an invisible light beam is broken by your car or - worse - by a child.

  • Where you live – what atmospheric conditions do you have in your locality, are you near the sea, is your property exposed to harsh elements such as high winds? This could help determine what sort of finish you have on your garage door.
  • Kerbside appeal – if you plan to replace an existing door or put in a garage door to your new build, you should look at keeping this in the style of the property. It’s worth remembering that you might not be living in this house forever, so take a look at the property from the perspective of a buyer.
  • Will you want to customise your garage door with windows or panels? You should determine at an early stage whether your choice of door will allow for optional extras.
  • When it comes to door openers will you need the latest technology to access your garage via your smart phone or do you need a keypad so other family members can get in to the house through the garage?
  • How often will the garage door be in use? This could dictate the type of springs that should be specified.
  • Think about what will be kept in your garage. Will it be an extension of your home and effectively be used as an extra room? If so, you might want to think about insulating the door.
  • Do you need someone to remove your old garage door? Not all garage door companies will offer this service.

Before you commit to buying a garage door, get at least 2-3 quotes from different sources and use the above as a checklist. Going for the cheapest option is not necessarily the best thing to do.
