4 Basics of Garage Door Maintenance

The garage door is part of the home that we rely on to perform when we need it. If you’ve invested in a quality garage door, protect your investment with simple maintenance that will not only keep the garage door in top shape for longer, it will help to keep your warranty valid.

Follow our tips for maintaining your garage door and please remember to never attempt repairs yourself.

CHECK IT

Periodically give your garage door the once-over. Take a look at the tracks, springs and locks and follow lubrication instructions here.

PLEASE NOTE The spring unit is under tension at all times and should never be adjusted, except by approved, trained Garador dealers.

Make sure that items in the garage are not at risk of falling into the path of the door or the tracks; rakes, brooms and sports equipment are likely culprits.

Check over the panels to make sure that no dents have 'magically' appeared.

Sweep the area around your garage door to remove debris that can gather quickly, especially over autumn and winter.

TIP: Check your garage door at the change of each season.

CLEAN IT

Every type of garage door will benefit from being washed frequently to prevent blemishes and corrosion to the paint. Grit, sand and wayward leaves can all hinder the performance of your garage door. It’s especially important to wash your garage door often when you live in an area near the ocean or in geothermal areas.

The best way to clean your garage door is with straight water - use a hose and a soft cloth or brush, easy as!

NOTE: DO NOT WASH THE AUTOMATIC OPENER, IT WILL VOID THE WARRANTY AND COULD CAUSE ELECTROCUTION.

TIP: Make it a habit to clean the garage door at the same time as you wash your car (or take it to the car wash).

MAINTAIN IT

Perform a maintenance check by opening and closing the garage door while in manual mode. The door should require an equal effort to open and to close. DO NOT PLACE YOUR FINGERS NEAR ANY MOVING PARTS OR BETWEEN THE GARAGE DOOR PANELS WHEN THE DOOR IS OPERATING EITHER AUTOMATICALLY OR MANUALLY.

We recommend that when you first install a Garador garage door, it is checked within 12 months and then every two years. Book your bi-annual service and maintenance check by an experienced technician, such as our Garador dealers

TIP: If it is under very frequent use, annual servicing might be a good idea to maintain the integrity of your garage door.

DON'T IGNORE IT

Noticed a ding in your sectional garage door? Has someone bumped the door with the car? Noticed unusual sounds coming from the tracks or motor? Has your garage door opener stopped working or is it working intermittently? Do not ignore any of these garage door issues and please do not attempt repairs yourself.

Maintenance of your Garador garage door and opener is critical to ensuring its smooth, quiet, reliable operation, and in most cases is necessary to ensure your warranty remains valid.
