Common Questions about Roller Garage Doors.
A: A roller door is a one-piece curtain that rolls up into a drum above the opening when opened. Garador’s Roll-A-Door® style roller doors are made from high-quality steel that coils neatly overhead. They are great all-rounders for virtually any single car-width garage type – the door rolls up compactly, which maximises overhead space inside your garage. For domestic garage door openings wider than 3.2 metres, you'll need a sectional door.
A: Roller doors are valued for their simplicity and durability. With a proven design and quality materials, they operate smoothly and require minimal maintenance. They’re space-saving – since the door rolls up above the opening, you don’t need tracks back into the garage, and you can use the ceiling space for storage. They’re also very versatile: whether you have a single car garage attached to your house or a stand-alone shed with multiple bays, a made-to-measure roller door will likely fit (they are often used in situations where other door types might not be as suitable). Additionally, our roller doors are secure and robust – the curtain and locking mechanisms are designed with security in mind, so you can trust them to protect your garage.
A: Roller doors do require some clearance space above the opening for the rolled-up curtain (the “drum”). As a rule of thumb, about 400 mm minimum of headroom is recommended for a standard steel roller door to coil up comfortably inside the garage. For taller doors, the roll gets larger and may need a bit more space. If you have limited overhead room, don’t worry – our team can often offer solutions. In tight spaces, a Flex-A-Door (a hybrid that needs less headroom) could be an excellent alternative. Your Garador dealer will assess your garage and suggest the best option, ensuring you get a door that operates smoothly without obstructing your opening height.
A: Absolutely. All Garador roller doors can be fitted with a compatible automatic opener for easy remote-controlled operation. We offer garage door openers specifically designed for roller doors, ensuring reliable opening and closing at the push of a button. Our openers come with modern safety features like automatic reverse (if an obstruction is detected) and secure remote technology. In fact, Garador’s openers use TrioCode™ 128-bit encrypted remotes that protect against code grabbing and interference, so you can be confident in the security of wireless operation. If you currently have a manual roller door, talk to us – we can likely retrofit an opener to upgrade your convenience.
A: Yes – Garador roller doors are made from tough, zincalume-based steel (with a durable Colorsteel® finish) designed to handle NZ’s conditions. They resist rust and wear, and their simple rolling mechanism has very few moving parts, which means less can go wrong over time. The spring-assisted drum makes lifting and lowering smooth and reduces strain on the door. With occasional cleaning and maintenance (like keeping the guide tracks clean and lubricated), a Garador roller door will operate reliably for many years. We have decades of experience engineering our doors for New Zealand’s coastal air, sun exposure, and high winds (wind-lock upgrade required), so you’re investing in a product that’s been proven in our environment.
