Door Care & Maintenance

For urgent repairs or servicing, phone 0800 427 236 to contact your local Garador service agent or see their location here.

All metal garage doors are like cars, the more you maintain and clean your car, the longer it will last. Some areas of the garage door panel that seldom receive the benefits of rain washing are prone to a build-up of contaminants which can lead to corrosion of the material. To avoid this, wash regularly three to four times per year with clean water and a soft bristle brush, more often if you are located close to the sea or geothermal areas. The parts of your garage door to pay particular attention to include the curtain face adjacent to the door head and inside over the top of a roller door. So when you clean your car, clean your Garador garage door too. Timber finishes should be cleaned and maintained according to the timber finish manufacturer’s recommendations. For any service or maintenance enquiries, please contact your local Garador dealer.

Warranty

It’s important to have peace of mind when you make a purchase, but you also want to know that the company you purchase from will be around to service your warranty as well. Garador is part of a company that has been manufacturing garage doors since 1946 and we offer some of the most extensive warranties available. Not all manufacturer warranties are the same, it’s important to check the fine print, particularly for automatic openers. Does it include the full opener for the period of the warranty, or just the motor? Does it include servicing on-site, or do you have to return the opener to the manufacturer? All of these things are important, should something happen to your opener. Garador premium openers include a full 5-year warranty on not just the motor, but the electronics of the opener as well.

Please note, your warranty is only valid if you maintain your garage door and opener by following the instructions given in your 'Owners Handbook' or the instructions detailed on this page and if you have any queries or concerns, please feel free to contact your local Garador dealer.

Current Garage Door Opener Warranty information

Maintenance of your Garador garage door and opener is critical to ensuring its smooth, quiet, reliable operation, and in most cases is necessary to ensure your warranty remains valid.

GARAGE DOORS

ZINCALUME®  AND COLOURED STEEL FINISH GARAGE DOORS

Your coloured steel garage door has been pre-painted with a silicone modified polyester formulation which is one of the best paint films available today. However good a product may be, all exposed surfaces require some attention to guard against corrosion and any other harmful atmospheric effects.

Washing your garage door with clean water and a cloth every 14 days is recommended. More frequent washing is advised in salty or industrial fallout areas.

NOTE: DO NOT WASH THE AUTOMATIC OPENER, IT WILL VOID THE WARRANTY AND COULD CAUSE ELECTROCUTION.

Garador recommends that you check the operation of your garage door at least every three to six months (more regularly in extreme environments or with frequent use). The effort required to manually open and to manually close the garage door should be about the same (if door has an automatic opener, put into manual mode before testing the garage door).

LUBRICATION (every 3-6 months)

  1. Guide tracks: (Rolling garage doors) Clean the internal sections of the guide tracks with a cloth dampened with mineral turps or methylated spirits. Polish vigorously to achieve a smooth, dirt and moisture resistant surface, allowing the Nylofelt to glide more easily. DO NOT USE GREASE OR OIL ON THE GUIDE TRACKS. Sectional garage doors should be cleaned as per rolling door instructions, but do not require polishing of the internal guide tracks.
  2. Steel hinges: (If fitted). Sparingly lubricate with an all purpose machine oil. Also lubricate wheel to axle bearings.
  3. Plastic hinges: No lubrication is generally required, however silicon spray may be used if necessary.
  4. Springs: (Where accessible). Wipe over with an oily rag.
  5. Locks: Your lock does not require special maintenance, however if the key becomes stiff, a spray lubricant such as RP7 is recommended. Do not grease the lock.
  6. Automatic garage door openers: If you have an automatic opener fitted to your garage door it is important that you ensure the optimum operation of your door, otherwise you may reduce the effective life of the opener, and void your opener warranty. For more information refer to the maintenance schedule in your garage door opener’s instruction handbook.
  7. Opener chain: Lubricate with Chain Lube.

SERVICE AND REPAIR

  1. Lifting cables: (If fitted). Check for wear through by rubbing. If there is fraying or signs of corrosion contact your local approved Garador dealer. These cables are under extreme tension and should never be adjusted, except by fully trained Garador dealers.
  2. Fasteners: Check all screws, nuts and bolts to ensure they are secure.
  3. Spring tension: It is natural for springs to lose tension. Should the door become hard to operate or completely inoperative, contact your local Garador office, or call the Garador dealer who installed your door.

To keep your garage door running well, it is recommended that your door be serviced by an experienced technician every 12 months or earlier if required. Contact Garador for more advice on servicing.

WARNING

The spring unit is under tension at all times and should never be adjusted, except by approved, trained Garador dealers. No operator or other person should ever stand directly in the path of the garage door in its downward travel or walk through the doorway while the garage door is moving. Always use the garage door handle to manually operate the door. If your garage door is now, or later becomes, automatically operated, any pull down rope on the garage door must be removed. DO NOT PLACE YOUR FINGERS NEAR ANY MOVING PARTS OR BETWEEN THE GARAGE DOOR PANELS WHEN THE DOOR IS OPERATING EITHER AUTOMATICALLY OR MANUALLY.

DRYDENS WOODOIL CEDAR GARAGE APPLICATION

WoodOil is pre-applied to our garage doors unless otherwise requested. This precoat is done using WoodOil clear for protection during transportation, installation and new site development; the door should then be cleaned if necessary and coated with a second application on completion of site activity in clear or Colourtone depending upon desired results. The use of WoodOil on Garador Cedar Garage Doors protects and seals the timbers from environmental debris. It will not crack or peel from the surface. It will not let water ingress into the timber, thus reducing watermarks and keeping the moisture content in the timbers low, reducing the weight load on the motor and door frame. Re-application of Dryden’s WoodOil is recommended at up to two years after the second coat to the areas where the surface exhibits signs of losing the capability to “bead water” or Colourtone has faded.

GARAGE DOOR OPENERS

It is important to note that your garage door opener warranty can be voided if you fail to maintain both your opener and your garage door. If you have an automatic opener fitted to your garage door it is important that you ensure the optimum operation of your garage door. Otherwise you may reduce the effective life of the garage door opener.
